as You Await Election Results or Mourn/Recover/Celebrate Election Results
I am writing this post on 11/3/2020, election night, as we await results. My friend Christopher sent me this song, and I am obsessed with it (quick shout out to Chris for always sending me his best finds!!). “Night Bethlehem” by The Singers Unlimited! I have always loved The Singers Unlimited. I was first introduced to them with “We’ve Only Just Begun” which is the sweetest of songs.
If you are a musician, in my experience, the Christmas season brings gigs or general performances out the wazoo. I grew up in a household with a music teacher with yearly holiday recitals, attended a church where I participated and led musical ventures throughout the advent season, performed in upwards of 25 holiday concerts (not including gigs), participated in a chamber group for three years where caroling was required throughout the month of December, et cetera et cetera, I think you get the idea. I have played and sung an INCREDIBLE amount of Christmas music. You would think I would be tired of it. I kind of am. But not this song, and that is why I am so excited about it.
For the past couple years in that chamber group, my Christmas music practice began over the summer. That definitely took away some of the Christmas “sparkle.” This is the first year I have no organized musical outlet AND NO CHRISTMAS MUSIC to learn/perform/be forced to listen to. While you may consider it too early to listen to Christmas music, I think it is the exact comfort we need, or at least I need, this first week of November. The harmonies and blend are so yummy and the epitome of what I want to hear when I listen to any vocal ensemble.
