How to Take Pictures with Your Computer and iPad

Knowing how to take pictures with you computer is an easy and efficient task that can save you time and frustration.  The new online curriculum with Crescendo Music Loft will require you to submit your hand-written and delicately drawn responses electronically.  You will be happy to have this tool handy.  Note:  If you are using a desktop computer, the monitor must have a built-in camera, or you can purchase a separate camera to plug into the USB port.

Apple Products:

Newer apple products come with the application called ‘Photo Booth’.  If it is not already installed on your device, you can easily download it from the Apple App Store.  To find Photo Booth on your device you can click the magnifying glass in the top right corner of your home screen to search.  Once the application appears you have the option to double-click on the icon or drag it to your dock for easy access in the future.

Steps to taking a picture:

  1. Open Photo Booth.
  2. In the bottom left corner, you have a choice of:
    1. 4 consecutive photos (left icon)
    2. A single shot (center icon and default)
    3. A video (right side)
  3. Click on the red button to start.  You will be given a 3 second countdown before the image is captured which is plenty of time to hold up your beautiful piano keyboards and G Clefs.
  4. The photos are automatically saved within Photo Booth and displayed in the right corner below the camera view finder.
  5. You can easily delete photos, drag to your desktop or directly into an email AND the share button gives you even more options.
  6. Try creating a folder on the desktop that you can drag your homework assignments into for quick access.  You can then file that folder away after submitting your online assignments or just drag it to the trash.
  7. If you drag a photo out of Photo Booth a copy will always stay in the app unless you manually delete it by clicking the X on the top left corner of the photo.

Bonus Features:

The effects button in the lower right corner has some fun lenses and you can even play a slideshow of your work (found under the view tab at the top of the screen).

Windows Based Platforms:

All windows systems come with a built-in camera option.  The camera application can be found listed alphabetically in the start menu (windows icon), usually sitting in the lower left corner of your home screen.  You can also use the search option found on the taskbar at the bottom of your home screen.  Once you have found the application, you can double-click to open or drag it to the desktop for quick access.

Steps to taking a picture:

  1. Open the camera application.
  2. On the right side of the window you will find the option to:
    1. Take a photo (default)
    2. Click the video icon to switch to video recording
    3. Take a panoramic picture (certain newer tablets only)
  3. Click on the large while button to capture your image.  Be sure to have up your beautiful piano keyboard and G clefs centered in the view finder.
  4. The timer button on the top of the camera view finder allows you to set for intervals of 2, 5 or 10 seconds if you need some time setting up your shot.
  5. All photos and videos are automatically saved in the camera roll folder found within the pictures folder of your hard drive.  You can also click the bottom right icon to pull up your images.
  6. Try creating a folder on the desktop that you can drag your newly pictured homework assignments into for quick access.  You can then file that folder away after submitting your online assignments or just drag it to the trash.

Bonus Features: the settings icon can be found in the top right corner and offers options like photo bursts, framing tools and digital stabilization.
