Since Abigail Connolly had to study for an exam at culinary school, I took matters into my own hands to cull some new releases for everyone this week. As it turns out, it is a great week for me to do it. Many of my super heroes and heroines are on it!
Except for the last one, I put it in order of my favorites, most favorites being at the top. I put Mic Jagger and David Grohl last because you’re gonna need them to pump you up after listening to Dappy.
“Skeletons” by Easy Life
Murray Matravers’ normal, geeky sort of look is cracking me up. I guess everyone must know about them except for me because I don’t watch TV or movies much, but I just love their look and their vibe. This video is their US TV debut on Jimmy Kimmel’s show last week, and the song is off their new album Life’s a Beach that will be released on June 4, 2021.
“Intertwined” by Eloise
How have I not known about Eloise until NOW?! Oh my goodness. Such velvety loveliness in her voice. She must have listened to Melody Gardot (later down in this list). “Intertwined” is an introduction to her new album that will be released on June 18, 2021.
“11 Past the Hour” by Imelda May
I will be forever grateful to Tony Cafiero for introducing me to Imelda. This new release from her new album is a departure from her usual groove.
YouTube comments include:
This should be the new James Bond Theme.
After hearing this, Imelda needs to do a duet with Nick Cave. Or maybe that’s what I need 🙂 – Randy Levy
“Sunset In The Blue (Visualiser)” by Melody Gardot
Melody continues in her usual vein of beautiful, jazzy comfort with this release of the title track to her latest album. So glad to know she’s still singing and writing new music.
YouTube comments:
Wow – I don’t drink but this makes me want to be in an elegant 1950s nightclub at 2 AM with the lights low and Melody and her combo on stage oozing this gorgeously melancholy mood…. – countrypaul
Ooo La la. This song was made for a glass of brandy. – daddydojang
“California Soil” by London Grammar
I’ve never heard of these people, but I must be behind the times. This is the title track to their new album out now with an extra cool video.
Some YouTube comments:
She’s like a combination of Massive Attack and Florence + The Machine. – Seminabo
With London Grammar every song is a spiritual experience. – Anna Kőszegi
I hope she isn’t starting some weird cult, because if she told me to join I probably would. – anonymous
“Running Down a Dream” performed by Lucinda Williams [a Tom Petty cover]
How cool! Lucinda put out an entire album: Runnin’ Down a Dream: A Tribute to Tom Petty. Her glottal work is at a minimum on this song, so I’m liking it. I guess this album has been out, but I’m only just finding out about it.
“Heat Above” by Greta Van Fleet
Okay – so I wish these guys didn’t sound SO much like Led Zeppelin, but boy can that kid SING! OMG! I can’t get enough of that crazy voice! I’m showing the “live” version, not because I think we’re hearing live audio, but because it helps to see them, and they’re fun to watch.
Some YouTube comments:
If they do not play this at my funeral I am not coming. – martin voskuijl
I’m trying to process all this. It’s a bit as if Freddie Mercury was reincarnated as a Hobbit with Geddy Lee’s voice and Elvis’s fashion sense. But I think I like it. – Cathy Adams
Psychedelic, progressive and glam rock in 2021, amazing! – lyrics ITA
“Forest” by Charlotte OC
Cool indie rock with a great voice. I’ve never heard of her, but it looks like she’s been around and putting out music for awhile now.
“Wounds” by Dappy
Well, sometimes you just gotta stay in touch with what’s going on in rap. The pain is real, even if it isn’t his. The reason this music is still popular is because these guys are a voice for the ones who are feeling it. Excellent execution and video work.
“Eazy Sleazy” by Mick Jagger with Dave Grohl
From Mick himself, “I wanted to share this song that I wrote about eventually coming out of lockdown, with some much needed optimism – thank you to Dave Grohl for jumping on drums, bass and guitar, it was a lot of fun working with you on this – hope you all enjoy Eazy Sleazy!”
SO MUCH FUN!! I love seeing Mick still writing and performing. Totally relevant and fun for today.
Some YouTube comments:
Who knew it would take Jagger and Grohl to get a new Sex Pistols song??? Brilliant. J Rotten smiling and snarling with glee. – BlackiePawless
Dave Grohl, the only human who has played music with all the rock heroes of his childhood. – Jorge Andres
WTF this is one of the best old school punk pub rock roll jams I’ve ever heard! Should be a huge hit; but then it’s 2021…. – Mikk Lüftumie
