4 Speakers
When someone asks “How’s it sound?” The answer shouldn’t be “Depends where you’re standing.”
Only a sound company can have the right system for every venue. You have to choose your system and make it work everywhere. If your PA is undersized, don’t spread out too far. Make it sound good in an area you can cover. Your cables will limit you anyway: buy extra length so you’re adaptable.
How loud do you want to be and over what area? Compare specs like max SPL (maximum sound pressure level), coverage in degrees – both horizontal and vertical (narrower patterns will have higher SPL, less coverage) – and power ratings in watts, average and peak.
Speaker Types
There are three basic speaker types:
- Passive
- Active
- Arrays
Each has advantages and drawbacks. In the next couple weeks I will give you my insights on the best uses for each type. Plus, I’ll take another look at subwoofers.
